ברוכים הבאים לגן לאומי בית שאן! בסיורנו היום, נטייל בעיר סקיתופוליס, נבקר בתאטרון הרומי, נפגוש את טיכה אלת העיר, נסייר בשדרת החנויות שהייתה כאן וננסה לדבר עם  העמוד היחיד שנותר עומד לאחר רעידת האדמה הגדולה. אז מוכנים? קדימה לדרך.

שלום עליכם וברוכים הבאים, הגעתם לפתחו של גן עדן! כבר בתקופת המשנה והתלמוד, אמר ריש לקיש דברים אלו על מקומו של גן עדן: "גן עדן אם בארץ ישראל הוא, בית שאן פִּתחו". אני יואל הארכיאולוג ואני שמח מאוד לפגוש אתכם כאן בסקיתופוליס, היא בית שאן.

גן לאומי בית שאן אוצר בתוכו מבנים ורחובות מהמפוארים שנחשפו בארץ ישראל. כשמשלחת החפירה באה לכאן לא נראה פה דבר מלבד עמוד אחד יחיד שבלט מעל פני השטח, אבל ידענו שכאן שכנה העיר הרומית סקיתופוליס. סקיתופוליס הייתה אחת מערי הדֶקה פוליס, כלומר אחת מעשר ערים רומיות שנבנו באזור. התחלנו לחפור ופשוט לא האמנתי למראה עיניי… אחרי שהוצאו מכאן ערימות של סחף נחשפה עיר מפוארת, ששרידיה מספרים סיפור מרתק – על מבנים, אנשים ותרבויות, וגם על רעידות אדמה שפקדו את המקום. הדגם שלפנינו, מציג את העיר כפי שהייתה בתקופה הרומית והביזנטית. ראו את התל הקדום ובראשו מקדש זאוס, את התיאטרון הגדול, את רחוב פלאדיוס – הרחוב הראשי, המחבר בין המקום שבו אנו עומדים לתל בית שאן – ואת רחוב סילוואנוס, שגם הוא היה רחוב ראשי, וחצה את רחוב פלאדיוס. סקיתופוליס היוותה צומת דרכים חשוב בנתיב היוצא מעבר הירדן המזרחי לכיוון הים התיכון, ומרכז העיר שירת את תושבי הסביבה, את חיילי הלגיון וגם את הסוחרים שהגיעו לכאן בדרכים הרומיות הסלולות. לפני שנצא לסיור אני ממליץ לכם לגשת למרכז השירות ולצפות בסרט המספר את סיפורה של העיר. אם בדרך תפגשו דמויות מהעבר, תגידו להן שיואל שלח אתכם ואולי תזכו לשמוע עוד סיפור מעניין.

Station 1 – The Model

Shalom and welcome to Bet She’an National Park! In your tour today, you’ll walk through the city of Scythopolis, you’ll visit the Roman theater, meet Tyche, the city’s goddess, tour the street of shops that once stood here, and try to talk to the only column left standing after the great earthquake. Ready? Off we go.

Shalom and welcome, you’ve arrived at the gateway to the Garden of Eden! Back in the time of the Talmud and the Mishnah the Jewish sage Resh Lakish said: “If the Garden of Eden is in the Land of Israel, Bet She’an is its entrance.” I’m Yoel the archaeologist and I’m very happy to meet you here in Scythopolis.

Bet She’an National Park encompasses some of the most magnificent structures and streets ever discovered in the Land of Israel. When the excavation expedition first came here, nothing could be seen except one column that protruded on the surface. But we knew that this was the location of the Roman city of Scythopolis. Scythopolis was one of the Decapolis cities – that is, one of ten Roman cities built in the region. We began to excavate and I simply couldn’t believe my eyes…After the heaps of sediment were removed, a splendid city was uncovered, whose remains tell a fascinating story – about buildings, people and cultures, as well as about an earthquake that struck the site. The model you see here shows the city as it looked in the Roman and Byzantine periods. Look at the ancient tell with the temple to Zeus on top, the large theater, Paladius Street – the main street, which connects the place where you’re standing to Tel Bet She’an – and to Sylvanus Street, also a main street, which crossed Paladius Street. Scythopolis was an important crossroads on the route that led from eastern Transjordan to the Mediterranean Sea, and the city center served the inhabitants of the area, the Roman legionaries as well as the merchants who came here via the roads the Romans built. Before starting out, I recommend that you go to the visitor service center to see the film that tells the city’s story. If on the way you meet figures from the past, tell them that Yoel sent you, and maybe you’ll hear another interesting story.

Go down toward the city, turn right and enter the theater. The next station is in the top row of seats.
